Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Our review of the results of the initial GSRC interest survey yielded many helpful suggestions, comments, and criticisms. Many thanks again if you had a chance to participate. Respondents submitted a few recurring comments and questions which we address below.

1. You shouldn't promote certain types of lifestyles.

We agree. The goal of the GSRC is simply to provide informational resources related to issues of gender and sexuality. We do not suggest that any lifestyle in which an individual chooses to engage (within the confines of the law) is more valid or morally acceptable than the next. As evidenced by our Library page, we offer resources that speak to a wide variety of backgrounds and opinions. We will attempt, to the best of our ability, to address the concerns of any person who comes to us seeking assistance. We will not accept disrespect toward those utilizing the GSRC's resources or toward those providing them.
It is our goal to maintain impartiality. After reviewing the survey comments, we did rework some parts of the site in keeping with this goal. Your independent review is appreciated.

2. The survey questions were confusing, their terms were different than I
expected, or their responses were ordered in a biased manner.

We apologize if you found fault with the survey. It was reviewed by several professors and other individuals in an attempt to eliminate ambiguity. Still, due to peoples' varied ideas and opinions, such comments are perhaps inevitable.
For some standard definitions (among them: sex and gender), please click here to view a document provided by WSU Sexual Aggression Student Educators and Advocates (SASEA). These terms are by no means static or unopen to interpretation, but the provided definitions are a good starting point.
Responses to the survey questions were either arranged in alphabetical order or to denote the spectrum of possible responses. The ordering was not intended to favor any response over the others, but was chosen by convention in order to facilitate the survey-taking process.

3. Is the GSRC a division of Wayne State University? Also, why
      "Community" and not "Center?"

No, the GSRC is an independently-run student organization. For legal reasons related to this reality, we cannot be called a "Center" and decided to call ourselves a "Community." This description is fitting since the GSRC is housed in the WSU Student Center and organized by WSU students to serve the campus community. Eventually, we would like to see the GSRC become a staffed center run by the university, much like those that exist at other major universities.

4. How is the GSRC funded? Is my tuition higher as a result of this project?

As stated on our About page, the creation of the GSRC was made possible in part due to a $2300 Undergraduate Research Creative Project Grant from the Office of Undergraduate Research. This office administers a finite number of grants each year which come from Wayne State's general funds. If the GSRC had not received this grant, another student or group of students would have. Furthermore, the budget for Undergraduate Research has been decreased in recent years. Therefore, the GSRC has not contributed to increased tuition prices. We continue to pursue outside grants (not from WSU) to sustain the center's operation. Many resources have also been donated by individuals and organizations.
